I battled with a hormonal imbalance that began in my teenage years and lasted until my mid 20′s. It caused my period to come about 4 times a year and when it did come it came with a vengeance! It would be beyond heavy, I’d have epic cramps (the kind that make you throw up), major emotional ups and downs, unbearable food cravings (I gained and lost the same 15lbs over and over) and blinding headaches. My doctor put me on the pill to “regulate” my period and while some of the symptoms went away, they were soon replaced with chronic yeast and urinary tract infections and the constant feeling that things weren’t “right”. At 24 I ditched the pill and sought the advice of a naturopathic doctor who opened me up to new concepts and helped me discover ways I could live healthier and more in harmony with my body and my cycle. For the first time that I could remember, I started to feel good! It’s hard to describe how life-changing this was for me. Through simple lifestyle adjustments and nutritional changes I hadn’t just fixed my period problems, I had completely revitalized my life. Issues that I had thought were unrelated, exhaustion, low sex drive, depression, low self-esteem, were all tied to the same underlying problems I was having with my cycle.
